Scheduling Letter for Current 9th-11th Grade Students

February 14, 2022

Current 9th, 10th and 11th Grade Families:

Scheduling time for the 2022-2023 school year is upon us! Course selection is one of the most important processes that students undertake during their high school years. Choosing the correct courses with input from parents/guardians, teachers and school counselors is critical to a successful and enjoyable year. When creating a course schedule, please keep in mind several factors for your child such as graduation requirements, college admission requirements, career interests and appropriate, academically challenging courses.

The school counselors had the pleasure of meeting with your child last week in an extended homeroom to introduce the scheduling process. The scheduling process for next school year will look a bit different than previous years. These changes will allow for more collaboration and support for your child.

All course requests will be completed online, allowing you to enter the course requests with your child at home. The course request process will begin on February 23, 2022. More information will be shared with families next week!

We ask all families to carefully review this year’s scheduling process:

  1. Please review the 2022-2023 Program of Studies with your child. The program of studies is a comprehensive listing and description of all available courses and graduation requirements at South Park High School.
  2. Complete the paper course request sheet that your student received during their counseling presentation, to use as a reference for online course requests. Those request sheets are also available on the scheduling website by clicking here. Students will not be asking the teachers to sign their course request sheets this year. The online scheduling system will only allow students to select courses for which the students have met the prerequisites. Teachers will have conversations with students about the most appropriate class based on semester grades and, in some cases, their recommendations. Please be sure to review the prerequisites for each course in the program of studies. The course request sheet is simply a guide to be used with the online portal.
  3.  Once the online scheduling portal has opened on February 23, you are able to request your child’s courses online via PowerSchool. The online scheduling process can only be completed through a student’s PowerSchool login. Now is the time to make sure your child knows his/her PowerSchool login information.
  4. Follow the Scheduling Classes in PowerSchool Direction Sheet available on the scheduling website by clicking here. This quick handout walks you through the process of scheduling classes in PowerSchool for the upcoming school year.
  5. Students will choose electives and have alternative choices.
  6. The scheduling portal will be open for one week from February 23, 2022 to March 2, 2022. Following the closing of the portal, the school counselors will be meeting with students to review their course selections and progress toward graduation and post-secondary goals.

Here is some additional information to keep in mind during the scheduling process:

  • All students must schedule 7 credits during the school year.  Please note that when choosing courses, alternates are not included in the required 7 credit total.
  • Lunches and grade-level required courses have already been pre-selected.
  • Final course offerings for the 2022-2023 school year will be determined by total student requests. Courses with low enrollment could be subject to cancellation.
  • Students should carefully consider their choices and fully understand the prerequisites for each course. Choices should not be based on teachers or friends.
  • If there is a concern about a core course that a prerequisite has not been met, please contact your student's teacher.
  • Any student who has failed a required course or who has not taken a required course will need to include those courses in their selection.
If at any point you have questions about the scheduling process, please feel free to contact your child's school counselor.

Respectfully,
